Um…Well, so far so good. I mean, they haven’t tried killing each other….yet… But we haven’t actually seen Imugi’s left hand either, have we? …If she has her sword. I admit I had to Google ‘Sailor Moon’, a piece of Bree sarcasm that didn’t go down too well. I’m guessing Imugi’s response “Boomer” is, to her, anyone over 20 is old. Will be interesting to see Markho and Warmheart’s reaction to her, hopefully next episode! But I think Bree’s old friend Sephni had better do some quick talking to dial the room temperature down. The problem there, is that, even before she was abducted by the Drakon cult, Sephni never gave the impression of being the brightest firework in the box. But I loved the ‘night elf pole dancer’ comment, especially Bree in panel 1.
At least they know (sort of) who (or rather what) each of them are. Can we expect any more surprises or revelations in the next episode? As always, some great art, and each episode leads to wanting to see the next one!
Yes, seriously. I’m a Brit, not into Japanese stuff, and the wrong generation. Ask me about Eel Pie Island or the early Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd. Ask me about 1960s movies, or Alfred Hitchcock. Just looking at the Wikipedia article put me off.
I’m an even wronger generation and an even wronger country than you, mate. Trust me on that.
And I know about every single thing you mentioned (alas, including Eel Pie Island – I don’t like British jazz all that much; I’m more into modern jazzists like Hiromi Ueara – don’t mistake her for an Anime composer) I’m STILL surprised you don’t know the most famous example of one of the most prominent genres of the XX century, that’s all.
Ha, ha, you jest, man! So I asked my step-grandson, who is 19, into D&D, gaming, comics, graphic novels, Warhammer, etc., and his reply was a bit vague – “To my knowledge Sailor Moon is a anime/manga of girls transforming into magical girls who gain powers to fight evil, unless you’re referring to a different property with the same name” – unquote. Didn’t sound like “one of the most prominent genres of the XX century” to me! That’s just a bit of a sweeping statement, especially those of us who are not into manga. Eel Pie Island? More early 1960s blues and rock, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Pink Floyd, especially The Who, Townsend lived on the Twickenham bank, while from 1977 to 1981 I lived about 15 minutes’ walk away. Even got photos of the old Hotel, before and after it was burnt down (in suspicious circumstances, I might add!) The jazz scene was more nearby Richmond-Upon-Thames, or in the local pubs. You got me curious about the “wronger generation and country”.
Let’s just say that I’m a WEE bit older than you guess I am.When I was born, Anime was… not a thing. It become one, a couple decades later.
Gods, I miss Astroboy.
sorry, hit “send” too fast.
Also, Sailor Moon. The manga that defined the “magical girls” genre. Which IS one of the most widely represented genres of manga. Saying that Sailor Moon (which I have, surprisingly, not yet watched) was important is not “a sweeping statement”: is a statement of fact. Much like The DIligence is one of the most important westerns, because it helped defne the genre. Also, that your step-grandson, who clearly is not into Sailor Moon, DOES know about it, is proof that it is widely know – not of the opposite.
Now, if I were to talk of Pretty Cure, or of DoReMi, or of other, less known magical girl genes, I’d understand calling them “not so important” (and I know the Pretty Cure fans will go out for our blood after that, so let me hit the reinforced concrete bunker real fast)
I swear that whole turning everyone to stone thing better not have been for nothing. Not an ounce of trust for Imugi right here. Even if she gave music to temporary calm Sephni. Like honestly…
I’m old as the hills, I don’t give a gosh darn about anime, and there is still no way I would have had to google Sailor Moon, one of the most famous examples of one of the most prominent genres of the 20th century, which was already globally huge in the mid 90s and is still going strong now. Seriously, I’d have to have been living under a rock.
My favorite jazz band is NoMeansNo, but they betrayed us all by retiring.
Ha, ha, you guys. Not so much under a rock, just never interested in the gamer, D&D, Manga, Warhammer universe, so of course my 19 year-old step-grandson knows, or at least recognizes the name. Some of us know more about Dan Dare, Jeff Hawke, Modesty Blaise, Jet-Ace Logan, Captain Condor, Karl the Viking, Golden Age sci-fi stuff…. As I was reading The Lord of the Rings before most had even heard of Tolkien, E.R. Eddison, Lovecraft, Mikhail Bulgakov, Olaf Stapledon, and James Branch Cabell…Sorry, I still don’t equate Sailor Moon as “one of the most prominent genres of the 20th century”…. Now, THEY were genre busting! But then I’m not a DC/Marvel fan either. I still preferred European graphic novels. Less “under a rock”, more an “outsider”, blazing the trail few others dared to follow!!
Most kids dont even know what a “boomer” actually is. I once saw one call “ok boomer” to a guy born in 2005, for having played the original Overwatch instead of Overwatch 2, I kid you not.
Yeah, ‘boomer’ refers to a ‘baby boomer’, someone born in the late 40’s through to the late 50’s, just after WW the sequel when a lot of horny randy soldiers came home and had nothing better to do than knock up their wives or girlfriends to ensure they (the wives and girlfriends) couldn’t work anymore and staid home
You’re right about ‘boomer’ – a horrible term, in my opinion – is anyone born from 1945 onward, but apparently it expends (or does so in the UK) up until the mid-1960s, perhaps because until just the last 20-30 years no-one had started the whole generational category thing. In many ways, they (the WW2 parents of the so-called ‘boomers’) then took umbrage, and resented that their offspring, hereafter called ‘teenagers’, of course had more fun than they did. So, in the 1950s and 60s, teenagers got the blame for everything that was wrong with the world. At least, that’s how it seemed this side of the pond.
It’s less about “Ok, Boomer” being “correct” and more just it being an insult now. Same way “Whatever autist.” went as an insult a few years ago, when 4Chan tried to push that net-wide and associate being autistic with an ultimate insult. (Thankfully it never lasted)
Imugi is definatley giving the vibe of being a “symbiote” who’s colour/fantasy world self is becoming lost to the grey/reality worlder.
I guess the other possible option would be that the grey/reality worlder is simply the more dominant of the pair and expresses more often over the colour/fantasy worlder.
There interchangable, not tied to british/american english one can be used as they color grey. And the other gray has always tied to naming like lord graystoak(sp) i.e tarzan
The Webster’s Dictionary I had eventually feel apart from overuse, but I have an old ‘British Commonwealth’ Roget’s International Thesaurus, which, in the index, refers ‘grey’ (the colour) to ‘gray’, while saying greyhound with the ‘e’, of course. I noted that our friend and inspiration, Wormius, uses ‘gray’ not ‘grey’. My Oxford Dictionary OED, says “grey (US gray)”. Actually in UK place names both spellings appear, in London ‘Gray’s Inn Road, WC1, Grey Eagle Street, E1 (as just examples). There are no rules for names! In general, UK ‘grey’, US ‘gray’. As Wormius would say “We only do it to piss off you Brits!”
Huh, had an impression Imugi might be older and now she’s dropping an okay boomer on Bree.
For fucking Sailor Moon, even.
Yeah, was thinking the same thing
Is Sailor Brat even old enough? Like, even born this century?
Um…Well, so far so good. I mean, they haven’t tried killing each other….yet… But we haven’t actually seen Imugi’s left hand either, have we? …If she has her sword. “had to google Sailor Moon” – Seriously? Are you fishing for an “OK zoomer” meme?
;-P

BTW,
THIS is my all-time favorite Magicl Girls example.

Yeah, Moon was way before your step-grandson was even born, and yet, as erana said, he still knew about her
I swear that whole turning everyone to stone thing better not have been for nothing. Not an ounce of trust for Imugi right here. Even if she gave music to temporary calm Sephni. Like honestly…
We still don’t know what that whole stoning thing was about, or who actually caused it
I’m old as the hills, I don’t give a gosh darn about anime, and there is still no way I would have had to google Sailor Moon, one of the most famous examples of one of the most prominent genres of the 20th century, which was already globally huge in the mid 90s and is still going strong now. We didn’t, but Bree already did.
“OK, Boomer” doesn’t work. My eldest daughter and her cohort were huge (obnoxious) SM fans. They’re all Gen X.
Most kids dont even know what a “boomer” actually is. I once saw one call “ok boomer” to a guy born in 2005, for having played the original Overwatch instead of Overwatch 2, I kid you not.

‘Boomer’ just means anyone older than you, in a negative way, now. My grandchildren use it about people born in the 2000s.
It’s less about “Ok, Boomer” being “correct” and more just it being an insult now. Same way “Whatever autist.” went as an insult a few years ago, when 4Chan tried to push that net-wide and associate being autistic with an ultimate insult. (Thankfully it never lasted)
They recently did a reboot of Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon Crystal.

Interesting thoughts there, especially as we’ve seen Bree go ‘grey and spooky eyed’ a few times. Oh, you spell ‘grey’ the British way!
There interchangable, not tied to british/american english one can be used as they color grey. And the other gray has always tied to naming like lord graystoak(sp) i.e tarzan
Yups, always understood it to be that way: ‘e’ is the colour, ‘a’ is the name (and it’s ‘Greystoke’ though
)
Believe it’s more that, unlike Breen and Sark, Imugi didn’t have an avatar to inhabit when she ‘crossed-over’
I’m guessing she’s a Zoomer if she’s getting Millennials mixed up with Boomers!
Night Elf Pole Dancer? I have thought about that once or twice.
Maybe one of the images if week we will see one of her going down pole holding sword.
Did I post here? I forgot.
