IDK about you guys, but…The new vote beneath the comic? I went with “The Sexy”…Mostly because it offers new options in the narrative. Yes, it’s sexy…But it also adds a depth of humorous realism that’s just not gotten elsewhere. Why is she naked? Well, because her clothes were destroyed like eight times now by things that, in other comics, or games, would have somehow, magically, left her clothes unscathed.
TLDR Vote isn’t deep enough. Reasons too deep. I think too much. Boobs.
Bree is holding her knife the wrong way (thumb toward pommel) here, whereas in earlier offerings she was doing it the right way, thumb toward blade. Why?
Her bladedancing trainer was prone to lots of pointless flourishing, and Bree picked up the habit of constantly reversing her grip when she’s not actively cutting.
Why is it “the wrong way”? Oh, ok, I think I get it: you’re trying to keep your enemies at bay so point forward like a mini-sword, right? But you can definitely stab much harder the way she and the lizards grab the knives (although very hard to get into position).
Guess so, I just did some mini-practice myself to test my own intuitions and seems to work but would not so easily in a frontal fight, where you put the point forward to dissuade your enemy (the stab is less powerful but easier to place and can also slash, something very hard the other way).
The way all these guys are running it would seem that what they want is to either embrace each other and then backstab or slide past each other and then grab and backstab. A point forward would dissuade or stop with a serious bleed the first movement.
But I’d say there’s some room for both positions, just not when frontally attacking, right? Also you don’t charge with a knife, you wait, dodge and place your stab/slash at the charger. A knife is not a spear.
It also works pretty good as a guard, as you can brace the flat of the blade against the inside of your arm for added protection and leverage. And if you get good, you can switch between a forward grip, reverse grip, and throwing grip very fast.
You have to be very good at flipping the knife around and there’s always a serious risk you lose your grip when changing positions while dodging and jumping. I wouldn’t do that: protecting my wrist is not the top priority, and dropping the knife by miscalculation can have horrible consequences.
The only way I can imagine myself doing that is if I’d be trying to slide behind the opponent, grab him/her and backstab right away. A quite complex move.
Its less about protecting the wrist and more about gaining the leverage to deflect a blow from a larger, heavier weapon. And if you’re bouncing around so much that you risk losing your weapon during a grip change, you’ve likely already compromised your footing and ballance anyway, something far worse then simply dropping your knife.
And stabbing is only half the equation. A good slash or slice can be just as effective as a stab. Moreso even, as a stab needs to land on the torso or head to be effective, whereas a slash can be fatal when used on a limb, something far more likely to be an availible target during a fight.
OK, Balthazar, seems you know what you’re talking about. In any case, while I totally see the aspect of slashing tendons at the limbs and such, I fail to see how can you really block or parry an attack with a heavier weapon with a mere knife, that’s why I’d rather do the dodging, sliding and moving fast around (“jumping”?) rather than being static: my feeling is that you don’t have anything that you can use for “passive” defense, just a pointy sharpy thing with a very short range (so you have to get close at some point).
The pommel style is Spetsnaz (Russian Special Forces) style. It involves a lot of very quick jabs and short slashes. A more defensive style than the western (thumb to blade) style developed from the parrying daggers common in western europe.
Absolutely excellent point, Bill. Magic always explains everything, except when it doesn’t.
But… what about the dracomonk’s daggers? They seem little more than cutlery to me but they are wielding them exactly the same way? Are they infiltrated Russian agents or just plain dumb?
In their case, that is the standard technique used by maiden-sacrificing cultists the multiverse over. Drawing from a long tradition of pulp-magazine covers, this tried and true technique has (almost) sundered many a bared bosom stretched across many an unholy altar.
Yay, Gang’s nearly all here ๐
It’s kind of fun that Bree has just been fighting the last several dozen pages completely naked.
(And these detailed backgrounds are amazing ๐ )
Boom. Headshot.
…..
Hey if I didn’t say it, someone else would have.
I will also say that I am very happy, because Phawkes is one of my favorite characters.

One batch two batch
Penny and dime.
I couldn’t help it. His “kittens” quip just made me think of it
I am RIGHT there with you. Basically came here to post exactly that.
The fourth answer of today’s riddle should be “all of the above”. I had a hard time choosing between the three relevant options, really.
It’s definitely not the backgrounds, at least not those of this page…
I don’t have bullets for everyone, so you’ll have to share. ๐
*breathes deeply* I’m gonna touch myself later.
I had to vote the characters. Moonblade and Lassa’s recent arc especially.

> Bree picked up the habit
Ah, well, I guess that’s OK then. As long as she picks up on when actively cutting might be an immediate prospect.

Triceps vs biceps, no?

Oh, and the drip of blue, er, stuff from the bore of the rifle is an artistic touch.

Interesting, thanks.
Not.
Reverse grip was historically called “Spanish”, but actually most schools train their students in both variants. Western or eastern or southern.
Erm, guys? Her dagger is VERY magical and will probably do all the heavy lifting on it’s own.

Cultists fighting hand to hand. Meh.
