Thank you all for your patience during this past week’s downtime. We now resume with a bit more of what the heck is going on behind the proverbial scenes.
I see. While other nations (Germans, US, …) were removing decorations from their helmet during time, French didn’t put that many on so they decided to just keep it.
I got slightly confused by the change of colour schemes between the preceding panels and the last one, but unless the two gods swapped drinks as well as places, then it is clear who became whom.
Ouch. This scene reminds me of the questions shelved on the merged personalities of Jenny and Bree. It’s stuff we all want to know about, but it still there still is a touch of existential dread involved for me.
well, to be fair, Blue-yet-unnamed-girl’s grayside form is a battered, rags-dressed black woman – drinking lemonade, no less – hose clothing, condition and hairstule scream post-1850s, pre-1950s. (I know, a whole century of error margin. This is a webcomic panel, not a primary source photograph). 😉 So my guess is… nope, not roleplaying. Unless both of them are pulling Bree’s leg.
My guess is we are talking pre-D&D games that Jennifer and Brain were playing. We have French WW1 uniform (helmet, I think the blue colour was introduced circa 1913-14.) The black girl could be from the Civil War period. The name Ananta is of Hindu/Buddhist origin, a goddess. No, not roleplay. Mala was a little girl with a gummy leg, what era was she? A sort of alternative fantasy world heaven? We come back to Jennifer, there was a car crash, the empty ‘pocket world’ apartment, Brian on the answer-phone, was she alright? The dream image of the sword spirits around a hospital bed… Maybe it is starting to come together. And the ‘Korean schoolgirl’, as I call her? She, like Jen and Sark, is late 20th century with her ‘Walkman’.
Doublegee, with “around an hospital bead”, do you mean panel 3 of #231 (https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/holy-need/ )? If so, good catch, it’s incredibly small. If it’s another page, please could you ellaborate?
No, actually it was Bonus Incentive Art page, No. 182, so, way, way back, and was in graysider monotone, a view of the three sword-girls as doctors or nurses about a hospital bed, implying viewed as seen by Jen. If you didn’t follow the Bonus art you missed it, not being in the main narrative. I have a download on file.
Good man, Guesticules, for finding that link to Bonus 182. Thanks. Just another of Andy’s little ‘hints’. I’m still intrigued about an even earlier Bonus, “Graysider Dennis”, who always seemed just a bit on the sinister side for some reason. Was he just a one-off? With Andy, you can never be sure.
Wow, Wormius that was an ingenious tweak of the story!
Best wishes that you will continue to recover. As you read this message, I have enchanted it to send lots of positive thoughts, hugs, goose bumps, and love to you!
Given that her name means Infinite (more exactly, Unending) in Sanscrit, and is both the name of the serpent that circles the world, over which rests Vishnu, AND one of the names of Vishnu himself…
**AND** given that every grayworlder ending here is a case of escapism of some form…
my money is that she is a Western Gaudiya Vaishnavism practisioner, likely a follower of Bhaktivinoda Thakur (the Hindu guru that started propagating GV in the West in the late 19 and early 20 century). That sounds deep and such until you realize the GV propagated by him is the foundation of the well-known Hare Krishna.
But even if my tongue-in-cheek interpretation is true and she is indeed a proto-hare krishna, one is to be judged by one’s actions. And her words one page ago DO count as actions. Quoting a poet which won’t be surprising me quoting given my name, she is “the one that faces fear when the darkness gathers near”.
Very interesting reveal. Didn’t see that coming.
O Double twist.
Is that UNIFORM? With helmet too much decorated to be modern but not enough to be historic?
dude, that’s just a WWI French helmet. BOTH modern and historic.
I see. While other nations (Germans, US, …) were removing decorations from their helmet during time, French didn’t put that many on so they decided to just keep it.
Apparently it’s called Adrian helmet.
Thanks for pointing me in right direction.
Someone from the génération perdue? This explains so much, yet at the same time raises even more questions.
Okay, I feel like this comic just got a few level points into “Seriousness”
I got slightly confused by the change of colour schemes between the preceding panels and the last one, but unless the two gods swapped drinks as well as places, then it is clear who became whom.
From Bree’s perspective they are still in right spots, but yeah the new perspective can confuse the comic viewer.
Personally thought they were new characters…
Yeah, same here. I just assumed there was another table there we weren’t seeing.
Yeah, I was hoping the drinks would make it clear who was who.

Can easily see many sorts getting lost in a power trip in another world that seems to them must better than the one they are from.
I mean we saw one result with Sark and his harem…
Wait, how long has Frenchie McSurferdude been there? And if Ananta has been there longerer…
As erana pointed out, that’s a WWI French army uniform
My take on it is he is roleplaying that… but that is just a theory.

I must say: Ananta is quickly becoming one of my favorite minor characters.

Fortunately it made it in to the archives before they stopped being added to
The Surferdude is the roelplay, the WW1 French Soldier seems to be the real player
And doubt this is a Jumanji-type environment (or maybe it is… that interface changed from a board game to a video game)

Did ya feel them?
Love ya,
Hypatia
Thank you very much! I appreciate the good vibes!
Now you have us all wondering who Gentle Ananta is in her real life?

And that’s enough for me.
