So let me get this straight: the Moon was birthing magic scrap metal around and it was forged by some half-dwarf half-elf angry smith (clearly his dwarf side was dominant) into standard issue talking machetes for the Elven Royal Guard.
I read it that the smith made intelligent weapons that wanted to be weapons, but Morgana considers that an insult to freedom.
It’s a bit like a moral quandary of if Person A could somehow create from nothing Person B with the personality of being truly happy serving Person A, are you freeing Person B from slavery by trying to separate them from Person A?
I would say that there is no universal answer, that it depends on details. But her situation is little different: she can choose “worthy master”. That makes it simpler: the best way to help her is to be good master to her. Even human slaves, who were not created to serve, just didn’t knew anything else, had trouble adapting to becoming free …
Moonblade says they were born that way, it doesn’t seem they actually existed as non-metallic entities, even if it is some sort of magical metal somehow derived from the Moon (fill in the blanks: meteor strike, gods-planetoids spitting around their ill-digested cosmic food, true fertile metal-birthing moons… whatever). She considers angry dward their “maker”, their actual creator.
Another possibility is that the Thornwood forged the swords into a combination of metal, his “pain and rage”, and the souls of Moonblade’s elvish sisters (“children of the Moon”), and that Moonblade’s attitude since her introduction is a product of Thorn’s “pain and rage.”
We’ll likely know more as Morgana continues the Moonblade’s backstory.
Nowehere is clear which their pre-forging status was. You imagine them as “elvish” but that’s not at all derived from Moonblade’s own belief nor from the dark elf’s words either. It seems they were some sort of metal with souls, else how could they be “forged”? What was the destinty or natural state of metal ingots with souls? Why did the Moon birth them? All that is not understood yet.
Were they meant to be turned into working tools rather, to live a life of toiling the soil as spades maybe?
Yeah, it’s difficult to tell: she’s looking at Moonie, but she might still be talking to GeeB’s (short for ‘GeeBee’ short for ‘Gothy Bitch’)
Kinda like what happened last week on Smackdown: Hymen said that the Tribal Chef was tired of shit ‘both of you were doing’ (paraphrased) while looking at the Uso’s (who thought he was talking about Sammy Owens)
“She’s not mine to trade”.
Perfect words, Bree.
Albeit I would keep the boots. As scavenged spoils of war over her beaten-to-pulp self.
(If you know my name and what it stands for, and notice I’m asking for her blood, you’ll know why and HOW MUCH I’m pissed at her for her… actions).

Right?
Sounds more like he stole their ‘spirits’ (or souls) to fuel the weapons

Breen determined that Moonie herself was a worthy master, and released her

Who is Bree addressing in the lasts panel?
That Gothy Bitch thought they were ‘ungrateful’ because of how they were forged? Rather than pissed off by what she did?
Makes me not want to know what she did to them after ‘freeing’ them…
And look at Breen showing growth
Wait wait wait, hold the trombone! Is Breen talking to Moonie or Gothy Bitch in the last panel?
Probably a little bit of both(but more logicaly toward moonblade)

A self-appointed “protector of the moon elves”, I presume?
Gothy bitch Morgana may have met her match with Moonblade.
