Something something Thermal Exhaust Port.
EPIC foreshadowing. My compliments.
Thanks!
Tell me, have you ever read Stephen King’s “The Eyes of the Dragon”?
“Roland was the only one not stunned to utter movelessness, and although he was too
modest to say so to Sasha, there was real heroism in his next few actions, as well as a
sportsman’s zest for the kill. The dragon might well have roasted most of the surprised
party alive, if not for Roland’s prompt action. He gigged his horse forward five steps, and
nocked his great arrow. He drew and fired. The arrow went straight to the mark – that one
gill-like soft spot under the dragon’s throat, where it takes in air to create fire.”
A king killing a dragon, and a queen doing the same
Ah, so that was where I subconsciously stole that from! Thanks for remembering that. I read that book a loooong time ago, but about all I can remember now is the bit with the tiny spinning wheel in the doll house.
I did read it back in the 80s (I know that’s older than many of your readers) yet still remember it quite fondly. I found the dragon’s description and many of the spells used by the bad guy to be quite… lore-accurate for the myths I learned in my youth. What I didn’t like was how the country of Andua seemed to be huge, donut-shaped, and with Delain smack in its center hole. (Was it so difficult to make more than just ONE fictional “foreign country”, Mr. King?)
Seriously. A country with jungle tigers, polar sled dogs, oriental fakirs, and sea pirates all at the same time, was that MUCH more interesting than the MC’s puny country. On that, YOUR writting is far, far better than King’s.
was a doll sized but fully operational loom but yeah. I haven’t read that book in ages either.
Was thinking more Smaug (which is possibly where King got the idea from… )
Tolkien dragons are different. All of them – from Glaurung to Smaug – had relatively soft bellies; Glaurung was sorely gut-wounded by a simple dagger even AFTER his side scales were hard enough to stand Dwarven battleaxes, and Smaug’s belly was so soft that he saw fit to cover it encrusting himself with diamonds and similar jewels – one of whom fell, making it a weak spot in his armor, not in his scales.
Tolkien got that from Beowulf, who also chopped harmlessly at the dragon’s sides, then stabbed its weak belly with a sword, then with a dagger. So did Siegfried (of Nibelungen fame) even with a magical sword. So did Sigurd (king of Sweden) and Wilfred the Hairy (count of Barcelona, among a looooong list of other counties) with non-magical swords. So did Saint George – but what he broke against the scales was a lance, before going swordity swordity sword with its belly. And so on.
The idea of dragons having a weak spot on the base of their neck related with their flame… let’s say that King took inspiration from other sources and leave it at that.
also, THANK YOU
Was that weak spot there before Bree’s previous stabbing or did she hit the same place as in previous stab?
It was there already
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/growing-pains/
first panel
All dragons seem to have it
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/feeling-invincible/
4th panel
It seems to be a known vulnerability of dragons
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/rebuttal/
5th panel
Wormius may or may not have been referencing the prominent use of that very vulnerability in other, highly popular, works of fiction.

Relevant paragraph quoted in my comment, two coments above yours.
It was there before Bree’s stabbing. If you see his human form it’s where the downward sword pointing thingy on his… uh… neck collar thingy?

Also alluded to … 5 years ago? Here: https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/closing-thoughts/
Looks like a sign telling: “stab me here”. XD
Warmie also had the fire gland’s opening as a dragon
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/feeling-invincible/
and Apostyk was showing it before
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/growing-pains/
Well spotted, guys! The dragon’s weak spot, wow, Mr Hunter! What a story-maker you are! Love it.
What a loyal elf citizen, willing to sacrifice her clothes for the princess’ sake of modesty. At least Bree is aware of how little good it would do. ^^;
Doing in the battle looks more fanatical hatred of nudity than loyalty.
The jewel on her tiara sparkled as she flung the point. Was she drawing on some power there?
I think it was covered either when her sister gave her the crown, or when talking with Mala Greenboot. If I get time later (and remember) I will go looking for mention of the crown’s power.
The power of the crown – “to find the way”.
Paige: “Let’s find where my stupid sister is.”
Bree: “Let’s cover for my often-stated-in-canon horrible aim with ranged weapons”.
While she’s trapped by the runic circle, she mentions that the crown has her lucky D20 on it (from her Jen half). When she gives it a roll, it shows the name Apostyk – which is how she gets free. Essentially her crown is probably useful in those very rare situations that incredibly serious tabletoppers will break out that D20 from a sealed case.
There’s whole superstitions about putting D20s in dice jail, or creating one by rolling like eighty of them and “getting out the 1s”. Basically Jen was a serious tabletop nerd.
Well spotted – well, but for the name being actually “achaeax”
https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/high-roller/
Thanks for noticing!
Damn it, can’t we see a green-haired elf with no clothes on?
8) She tried.
She still can. Just saying.
And so at last, the ‘million year old’ arrowhead thingy, the shaman will be pleased. Mala did have Bree’s best interests at heart (more than can be said for Morgana, me still thinks). And, in the end, Bree knew what to do and when to do it. Brilliant action page, great composition, especially Bree in throwing mode.
Loved that insightful bit of dialogue to the elf maid. How many outfits has Bree got through now?
Nice to see Moonblade and Lassa again.
I’ve been putting that waltz on a loop for longer than I really should have
Glad you liked it!
She just ruptured its Flame Gland. As soon as he inhales air, he’s gonna have a real BLAST!
Let’s hope he doesn’t rise from the ashes like Warmie did
He won’t. Wormie did because a shaman was nearby that used spirit magic to intervene in her death. Paige remarked that her healing would only work on someone who WANTED to be saved but at that point Wormie just learned that who she was angry at, her whole purpose for going there, basically her life’s mission, was for nothing so she was ready to die. Bree was going to have none of that and asked for others to help her and that’s how the orc shaman lady got a glowing eye (same eye that was damaged on humanoid dragon lady). Bree wanted her to start over and to find a new purpose…hence she became a dragon baby.
Getting sensible, reasonable comments on matters of life purpose from Bangladesh Dupree is… unexpected 😀
“sorry, random elf citizen, i literally cannot keep clothes intact, that’s how this world works, in fact, there is good chances that you won’t be able to keep them either, since you got inside the line of sight of the 4th wall”
she may now even lose her clothes to…
…fan art!
Probably ‘subject’ more correct than ‘citizen’, as the Wood-Elf society is a monarchy, and despite that Bree’s avatar Jen comes from the good ol’ USA. When the dragon explodes, any minute now, they might all lose their clothes.
It really depends. IRL European monarchies like England (deliberately not saying United Kingdom to annoy a Scottish friend of mine who is reading this, thank you guys in advance for rolling with it) or Luxembourg (*) have “subjects”, while other IRL European monarchies like Spain or Belgium have citizens.
No idea what the Wood Elves are. Requesting clarification from the author.
(* Yes, it is a monarchy even if the ruler is nor a King but a Great Duke. Duke and Great Duke are also royal titles).
*Also the Principality of Monaco, virtually an autocracy…You equally offend the Welsh, Cornish and Northern Irish, by only saying “England”, but even England is sub-divided (still) between north and south – hear an e-mail friend of mine from Manchester talking about “you southerners”… The division is still roughly that of the old ‘Dane Law’.
Yes, although rather downplayed by proponents of our monarchy, I guess technically we are all still ‘subjects’ of HRH King Charles III, he, of course, of the Germanic-Greek father, and mixed German-Danish ancestry…Our monarchy has pretty much been foreigners since the time of Danish and Norman-French. ‘Citizen’ seems to have entered English in the medieval period, but essentially it seems to denote an urban/town or city dweller. I rather associate it with the French Revolution. Personally I would much rather be a ‘citizen’ than someone’s ‘subject’, which always implies a lowly status akin to serfdom. In general, monarchs are only monarchs because their ancestors were more successful bandits than my ancestors.
In Bree’s world, I suspect the inhabitants of the various Elvish king or queendoms are ‘subjects’ – witness how autocratic Kindall was, or even Sephni, once she ascended the High Elf throne, turning all inhabitants to stone! Hardly a democracy!! And even Bree and Paige’s late, apparently unlamented, daddy was not actually ‘beloved’ from what Paige once remarked. Apostyk’s regime was hardly a barrel of laughs, but more akin to absolute tyranny, so no ‘citizens’ there! A subject (huh, pun!) indeed to raise with Mr Hunter!
We still don’t know what happened when Seph sat on the porcelain throne, everyone being turned to stone is just a guess at this point
And Kindall is a dick, we don’t know what things were like before he murdered his way to the throne
Just because the crown-wearer isn’t beloved doesn’t mean shit: many didn’t like Queen Liz
This N-th re-binging of the comic in search of old references made me realize something.
What happened with Nefice? Last seen here – https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/party-started/
Paraxis, the Nogrog and Ssithikus reappeared here – https://thisis.delvecomic.com/NewWP/comic/golems-song/ but Nefice didn’t.
Nefice wasn’t exactly one of the good guys (I use the word in neutral gender), so I’m guessing she is a still a stone statue. Not sure how Paraxyss got resurrected and we never saw Sisithkus get gorgonised, but I guess Nogrog could reverse the turning-to-stone thing if she wanted. Good point, though. Anything is possible in Delve, and if the Big Bad Dragon is about to explode, and Sark is now chief of the Orcs, I’m guessing a new story arc might be on the way in the near future. We still have Brian and the DM’s quest, of course.
Little snark there from Bree, directed at the artist?
So, Apo is a relative Smaug?
If he were, he would be wearing diamond-studded torso armor. Be glad he’s not. He’s already tacky and tasteless enough as he is! 😀
Was thinking of this part (can’t find the actual scene, but this is the relevant part anyway)
Apostyk could also be a Metallica fan for all we know. Hey, he IS known to be a dick and mostreat his followers…
Mmmm. I misremembered the tittle. Metallica wrote “You MUST burn”. “You WILL burn” was by Steeleye Span.
Re Sephni, Panels 3 and 4 of episode 540 seem pretty decisive her ‘subjects within the High Elf realm are turned to stone, except for Imugi, Bree and Sark being beyond the High Elf borders. Hardly ‘just a guess’, they are statues. Kindall was already in the past tense, Sephni quietly and simply killed him. Hereditary monarchs are a mixed bunch, often inbred, no certainty the heir might inherit good traits. Our lot (still basically German) are a good example – George III and IV, William IV, Victoria went a bit loopy after Albert shuffled off the mortal coil, Edward VII inherited all the worst Hanoverian genes, Edward VIII a near fascist, Andrew (Duke of York) oversexed but as dim as a gutted candle…mostly an arrogant lot. On the other hand, we are spared a ‘President Boris Johnson’.
Lassa and Moonblade remain one of my favorite parts of the whole comic.
I can’t wait to see them again
Para mi también. Well, and Teal.
Nice new art of Breen as the current invotive for “Spying with Lana”
